Terms of use

Cartorider helps you plan a ride. It does not know the road on the day, and it does not ride for you.

Routes, times and surfaces are estimates. Check them before you ride.

You decide where and how you ride, and you ride at your own risk.

A group ride is run by its host, not by Cartorider.

Planning and GPX export are free and need no account. These terms apply whenever you use Cartorider.

Cartorider draws routes from open map data, such as OpenStreetMap, and our own calculations. That data comes from others, and it can be wrong, missing or out of date. A road on the map may be closed, private, unsafe, illegal for your vehicle, or impassable on the day. Distances, riding times, surfaces, heights, place names and ferry crossings are estimates. We do not check any road, track or place on the ground, and we do not promise that any route can be ridden.

You decide whether, where and how to ride. Check the weather, closures, access rules and the law where you ride. Road signs, the police and what you see in front of you always come before any line on a screen or a device. Ride only what you, your bike and your gear are ready for. Do not handle a phone or a device while riding.

Dirt and offroad routes can use tracks that are private, closed, illegal to ride or dangerous. Finding out whether you may ride them, and whether you can, is your job.

Motorcycling carries a real risk of injury and death. Cartorider does not change that risk, and you take it on yourself.

A route someone else made, whether a shared link, an imported file or a group ride, is theirs, not ours. We do not review it or vouch for it. Check it as you would any route.

A group ride is organised by its host, as an independent organiser, not by Cartorider. We provide its page, its list of riders and its emails, and nothing more. We do not plan, lead, supervise or insure any ride. We do not check the route, the host or the riders, or their licences, bikes or experience. We are not a party to anything between a host and their riders, and a disagreement between them is theirs to settle.

Each rider decides whether to go and how to ride, and "Your ride, your judgement" applies to every one of them. A host is responsible for what they publish and for how they run their ride.

The emails we send for a ride, the one the evening before included, are a courtesy, not a safety check, and we cannot promise they arrive. A host may only invite people who would expect to hear from them, and we may limit or stop a ride used to send unwanted email.

The Cartorider apps record where you ride, from when you press Start. They are not a tracking or emergency service: nobody watches your ride as it happens, and nothing calls for help if something goes wrong.

You must be 18 or older to create an account, sign in, host a group ride or join one. When you do, you confirm that you are. Planning a ride and downloading its GPX without an account is open to anyone.

Cartorider lets you plan motorcycle routes, export them as GPX files, share them and organise group rides. Planning and export work without an account. An account adds saved rides that sync across devices, share links, photos and group rides. We may change, pause or stop any part of the service, and when that affects rides you have saved, we tell you first where we can.

You own the routes and content you create. So that the product can work, you give us permission to store and process them, and, when you publish a share link, to host that frozen copy for anyone who has the link until you turn it off.

The photos you add are yours too, and you confirm you have the right to upload them. You give us permission to store them and show them to you, and to anyone who opens a share link you publish with Include photos turned on, until you remove them or turn it off.

If you add a name, a profile photo or your bikes in My account, they show on the rides you share and host, and to the host of a group ride you join.

Don't abuse the service: no scraping at scale, no attempting to break or overload it, no using it to infringe others' rights or to harass anyone, and no reselling it as your own. We may remove any ride, photo or other content, and suspend or close any account, that breaks these terms or puts other people at risk. We do not have to check what people share.

Cartorider is provided as it is and as available. As far as the law allows, we make no promise that it is accurate, complete, always available, or suitable for any ride.

As far as the law allows, we are not liable for any injury, death, damage or loss that comes from riding, from a ride you plan, share, host or join, or from relying on anything the service shows. Nor are we liable for indirect loss, or for loss we could not reasonably have foreseen.

If we are liable anyway, our total liability to you is limited to A$10, or what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim if that is more. A claim must be brought within two years of when it arose.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits a right you have under consumer law that cannot be excluded or limited, including under the Australian Consumer Law. If you live in the EU or the UK, we remain liable as your law requires, including for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, and you can bring a claim in your own courts.

If someone makes a claim against us because of something you published, a group ride you hosted, or your breach of these terms or the law, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of that claim, to the extent it was your fault.

You can delete your account at any time in My account, and it is deleted 14 days after you confirm.

If we change these terms, the date at the top of this page changes with them, and the next time you sign in you agree to the new version. If you do not agree, you can delete your account. We keep a record of which version you agreed to and when.

Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, licensed under the ODbL. Exported GPX files carry this credit. Elevation comes from NASA SRTM, which is in the public domain.

Route videos are rendered on open data: satellite imagery from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 global mosaic (CC BY 4.0) blended with orthophotos from European national mapping agencies, and terrain assembled by Mapterhorn from the Copernicus DEM and national elevation models. Every exported video carries these credits burned into the frame, naming the sources that ride actually flew over.

Cartorider is operated by Javier Alvear in New South Wales, Australia. These terms are governed by the laws of New South Wales, and its courts hear any dispute, except as the EU and UK sentence above provides.
